About Muhummad

Muhummad completed a BSc in Mathematics and Physics at the University of Warwick and an MSc in Applied Quantum Computing at the University of Surrey. His fascination with quantum mechanics began with its “absurdity” and the strange behaviour of the universe’s fundamental building blocks. Discovering quantum computing deepened that interest and, as he describes it, became an obsession to better understand these systems.

What attracted Muhummad to FLiQC was the opportunity to combine research depth with industry exposure

“I get to work in a quantum ecosystem quite different from the one I trained in, with researchers I’d previously only read about, while collaborating directly with Q-CTRL on the project itself. That overlap is what I’d been looking for and what most traditional PhD pathways don’t provide.”

We asked Muhummad what his favourite part of his PhD has been so far, and he said:

“Strangely, the difficulty itself. When you first start reading papers in a new group, much of it feels like a foreign language – you’re not evaluating results, you’re decoding notation and assumptions that everyone around you takes for granted. Tracing each unfamiliar idea back to its foundations only reveals how much still separates you from real understanding, which is daunting. But there’s no shortcut through it, and I’ve found research demands patience more than brilliance. You return to the material day after day, filling gaps one at a time, and concepts that seemed impenetrable slowly become familiar. Watching that mountain resolve into a sequence of manageable steps has been the most satisfying part of the last few weeks.”
