A Technology That Will Change Everything

Quantum computing is not an incremental advance on today’s technology, it represents a fundamental shift in how computation works. Where conventional computers process information as binary ones and zeros, quantum computers harness the principles of quantum mechanics to perform certain calculations at speeds and scales that are simply impossible for any classical machine.

The implications are profound. Quantum computers could unlock breakthroughs in the design of life-saving medicines by simulating molecular interactions at the atomic level. They could revolutionise the discovery of new materials for clean energy, transform how we optimise complex logistics and supply chains, and reshape defence and national security capabilities. Industries from finance to agriculture stand to benefit from quantum-powered problem solving.

Australia is already a serious player in this global race. A lively ecosystem of quantum start-ups, major technology multinationals, and forward-looking enterprises has taken root her, built on decades of world-class research.

The defining constraint is not hardware or investment. It is people. Australia needs a new generation of quantum leaders, researchers, engineers, and innovators who combine deep technical expertise with the practical skills to build an industry that is collaborative, diverse, and capable of translating science into real-world impact. That is precisely what FLiQC was created to deliver.

At FLiQC, we are shaping Australia’s quantum future by training visionary leaders, fostering bold innovation, and building a connected ecosystem that turns cutting-edge research into real-world impact.

Our Story

The emergence of quantum computing as a transformative technology presents immense opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and technological leadership. Realising this potential demands a highly skilled and diverse workforce capable of advancing research and development across the full quantum computing stack.

The ARC Training Centre for Future Leaders in Quantum Computing (FLiQC) was established to meet that challenge. Funded by the Australian Research Council and supported by five leading universities alongside thirteen partner organisations, FLiQC fosters a vibrant, collaborative ecosystem that unites academia, industry, and government.

Headquartered at the University of Sydney, FLiQC operates across four additional nodes nationwide. Our Centre aims to contribute to strengthening Australia’s economic growth, scientific leadership, and global competitiveness in this critical emerging technology.

Our Mission

To train a skilled, diverse, and industry-connected research workforce that will lead Australia’s quantum computing future.

Our Vision

To establish Australia as a global leader in quantum computing through inclusive, full-stack talent development and innovation.

Quantum computers will perform calculations impossible on any conventional computer, solving critical challenges in drug design, advanced materials, defence, logistics, and more. Australia has been at the forefront of the global quantum boom, with a lively ecosystem of start-ups, multinationals, and quantum-aware businesses.

But to maintain this momentum, the talent pipeline is critical. Australia needs technology leaders who possess not only deep technical skills in quantum science and engineering but also the capacity to build an industry that is multidisciplinary, diverse, and inclusive. FLiQC exists to develop exactly that workforce.
