About Christina
Dr Christina Giarmatzi is a quantum physicist whose journey has taken her from Greece to Australia, where she has lived and worked for more than a decade. She earned her Physics degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, followed by a Master’s in Optics from Institut d’Optique, before completing her PhD at The University of Queensland.
While she has participated in quantum experiments, Christina’s passion lies in theory. Her research spans quantum causality and open quantum systems, tackling some of the most fundamental questions in quantum science.
At Macquarie University, Christina is building a research group dedicated to understanding and overcoming non-Markovian noise, one of the key challenges facing quantum technologies. Her team investigates how to characterise these complex quantum effects, detect them experimentally, and ultimately mitigate or even harness them for future applications.
Beyond research, Christina is a dedicated educator who teaches the next generation of physicists at Macquarie University. Outside academia, you’ll find her surfing, skateboarding, or playing guitar.
