About Peter

Professor Peter Turner is CEO of the Sydney Quantum Academy, an Honorary Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Macquarie University, and a member of the Macquarie University Research Centre for Quantum Engineering. He also serves on the Executive Management Committee of the ARC Training Centre for Future Leaders in Quantum Computing (FLiQC).

With nearly 20 years of experience in quantum information science, Peter has built an international career spanning research, education, and quantum workforce development. He completed his MSc and PhD in Physics at the University of Toronto, followed by an Alberta Ingenuity Fellowship at the Institute for Quantum Information Science at the University of Calgary and an Assistant Professorship in Physics at the University of Tokyo.

Prior to joining the Sydney Quantum Academy, Peter was Director of the Quantum Engineering Centre for Doctoral Training at the University of Bristol, where he established one of the world’s first graduate programs specifically designed to prepare students for careers in the emerging quantum technology industry. In this role, he led innovative training initiatives while also developing strong partnerships with government and industry stakeholders.

Peter has an extensive research track record, securing more than AUD$15.5 million in competitive funding from organisations across the United Kingdom, United States, Japan, and Canada. Through his leadership roles, he continues to support the growth of Australia’s quantum ecosystem and help develop the next generation of quantum professionals.
