Mr Soumyadip Das

  • PhD Candidate
  • University of Western Australia

Das completed an integrated masters in Mathematics and Computing at the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra in India.

His interest in quantum computing grew out of his interest in cryptography, and it was discovering the BB84 protocol that truly shifted his perspective. As he reflects, “the idea that security could be guaranteed by the laws of physics, rather than computational hardness, was fascinating.” Over time, this curiosity developed into a strong research focus in quantum optimisation and algorithm design. His master’s thesis explored this, with a focus on mapping combinatorial optimisation problems to quantum frameworks which ultimately led to a publication.

Das was drawn to the FLiQC Scholarship because of its strong emphasis on industry collaboration. During his masters, he worked closely with Tata Consultancy Services on quantum computing research, gaining firsthand insight into the importance of bridging theory and practical application. Since moving internationally, he has been enjoying exploring Perth and says that “working alongside diverse research groups has been really enriching.”
